Liebe Leserinnen, liebe Leser, als wir im März diesen Jahres unseren Call for Essays formulierten, um zur ersten Diskussionsrunde des Poetryfilmkanals einzuladen, konnten wir nicht voraussehen, welche Richtung der Blog nehmen oder wer sich überhaupt an ihm beteiligen würde. Umso spannender war es, Woche für Woche mitzuerleben, wie die Autorinnen und Autoren mit je eigenen Akzentuierungen und Thesen das weite Feld des Poesiefilms abzustecken begannen.
Dear reader, when we launched our call for entries in March this year we could not predict the direction that the discourse on our blog would take or whether there would be enough interest in the discussion about poetry film that we wanted to initiate. Even more so, we were amazed how the authors started to trace out the wide field of the relation between poetry and the moving image.
Kristian Pedersen: »I like how animation may convey or illustrate while maintaining some space for a reading experience. A poem walks a fine line when paired with visuals, and I think animation can help preserve an open reading.«
Film des Monats Dezember 2015 • Faszination wurde zur Obsession für den Titeldesigner Justin Stephenson: Knapp 15 Jahre lang arbeitete er an seinem animierten Dokumentarfilm »The Complete Works« über den kanadischen Dichter bpNichol. Konkrete Poesie trifft hierbei auf Titeldesign und zeigt auf beeindruckende Weise, wie sich Poesie und Film ergänzen können.
Film des Monats November 2015 • Abstrakte Farben und Formen gehörten schon früh zum experimentellen Repertoire des Poesiefilms. In »The Pipes/Pipene« (2014) verbindet der norwegische Künstler Kristian Pedersen die Bildsprache der Filmavantgarde mit Orgelklängen und spielt so zum Gedicht von Øyvind Rimbereid sein eigenes Requiem auf die Stavanger Fischfabriken.
Poetry films offer creative opportunities for exploring new semiotic modes and for communicating messages and meanings in innovative ways. Poetry films open up new methods of engagement, new audiences, and new means of self-expression, and also provide rich potential for the creation, perception and experience of emotion and meaning.
Film des Monats Oktober 2015 • Wie langweilig das Erwachsenenleben sein kann! In »The Man with the Beautiful Eyes« (1999) von Jonathan Hodgson spricht eine ermüdete Stimme von den Abenteuern der Kindheit, in denen die Welt noch perfekt schien. Der Film basiert auf einem Gedicht von Charles Bukowski.
When I was a first year film student, I made a short documentary about the late Hebrew poet T. Carmi. It was a short documentary that spoke about his life and the poems that he wrote. As a beginner, I tried to find images to show while the poems were read. When I showed the short film to my professors, one of them shook his head and said – poetry is simply not a visual medium – there is no connection between cinema and poetic texts. I didn’t know how to answer that at the time. I felt that he was deeply mistaken. For the rest of my film studies, I didn’t go back this question of the relationship between film and poetry.
